September Meeting
We met on September 5th at the Nature Center. Our scheduled speaker who was going to present on Cottage Gardening had a sudden illness and had to cancel at the last moment so Eileen arranged for us to have one of the interns from the nature center who was visiting from Africa come and speak to us about his work with elephants. He gave us a very interesting presentation. Pastor Magingii works with The African Wildlife Foundation. He works with farmers who live near the national parks in Tanzania, Africa. The elephants who live near the parks frequently wander into the farmer’s land and eat their crops and he helps the farmers learn how to scare them away. He is learning about our Nature centers here in the US. We enjoyed hearing about how they deal with wildlife since we all have our problems with wildlife in our own gardens!
Our Butterfly garden is looking wonderful. Jenny Boccardo’s Girl and Boy Scouts and her sons have been working hard as have our Club members weeding the garden and planting new flowers. The benches have been painted and sanded. New plaques have been placed on the arbor and the Autumn flowering clematis is in full bloom. Come and see the garden and there are pictures in the picture gallery too.
All those attending the trip to Leamings Run said it was wonderful. They learned all about hummingbirds and the flowers they love. The gardens were beautiful and a good time was had by all.
A work party was held and the hummingbird garden was enclosed with landscape ties and is mulched and ready for some Fall planting. The garden design is taking shape and will be presented at the October meeting. A picture is in the Photo Gallery.
Our next meeting will be Oct 3rd at SLNC Speaker will be Steve Pearson who will be speaking about Turtles!
