October Meeting
Our October meeting was held on Oct 3rd at the Nature Center. Our speaker was Steve Pearson who spoke to us about his research on Tracking Red Bellied Turtles. These are among the turtles that inhabit the creeks and lakes in the Nature center preserve. He described how he traps the turtles and identifies the different species he finds. He then attaches GPS transmitters and maps out where they travel through the various creeks and lakes. It was a fascinating presentation. He brought along some live turtles to show us. The Red Bellied turtle is a native species that many fear is becoming endangered. It makes up around 10% or less of the number of tutles found. Pictures of Steve and his turtles can be found in the Photo Gallery!
Committee reports were given. Our Butterfly garden is in great shape thanks to the girl scouts, the boy scouts, Jenn Boccardo and our faithful workers. A special thanks was given to Cathy Raupp, Grace Byrne, Elaine Hagey and Joann Cosgrove for their hard work in the garden.
Our trip to Leamings Run was very interesting and restful. We also learned a lot about butterflies and their habits.
The Philadelphia Horticultural Society seeks workers for the March Flower Show. It will be held this year for March 4-11 2007. Several members signed up to be volunteers.
The November 7th meeting speaker will be Maryellen Noonan who will give a presentation on Rain Gardens. The December 5th meeting will be a Holiday Celebration and Creating a garden ornament with Eileen Donahue
